Brewing More Sustainably

Our Kettle with new addition of a Vapour Condenser attached

New Vapour Condenser added to our Kettle

We’re very excited about our latest expansion at the brewery! From the end of January, and working with our friends from Krones, we have been busy installing our Energy Recovery System as part of our ongoing commitment towards improving our brewhouse’s sustainability practices.

After a successful application in 2022 to The West of England Combined Authority we secured a Green Business Grant to commission the latest addition to our brewhouse. The West of England Green Business Grant is awarded to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to help them make improvements to their facilities which improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To date the West of England Combined Authority have awarded over 70 grants to local businesses including ourselves.

Our new Energy Recovery System allows for heat generated during the boil by the kettle to be recovered and used to heat the next brew, reducing our natural gas consumption by 10%. It is estimated that this will save 70 tonnes of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere over the next 4 years. This will also improve our brewhouse efficiency as our capacity increases from 4 brews a day to 5!

This is just one of the latest sustainable initiatives that we’ve implemented at Lost and Grounded Brewers. Since opening in 2016 we have monitored our water, electricity and gas usage and have seen a reduction of about 40% over the last 24 months. Being able to run our brewhouse at full capacity increases efficiency so our water consumption has reduced from 6-8L water: 1L beer in 2017 to a ratio of 4L water: 1L beer. More recently in June 2022 we installed our 30 tonne malt silo to reduce our plastic grain bag waste and allows us to save 15,000 polypropylene sacks from going into landfill each year.

We’ve always had a very clear focus on our environmental responsibility so we are thrilled that our latest expansion will allow us to reduce our footprint and further our sustainability goals for the brewery.
