Capturing the Future: CO2 Recovery
We’re always dreaming big and looking towards the future at Lost and Grounded, and this summer we reached a major milestone on our sustainability journey, as we finally commissioned our new Dalum CO2 Recovery Plant.
Carbon Dioxide is not just the bubbles in your beer; it also plays a huge role in the brewing process. From pressurising tanks to purging lines, and packaging the final product, CO2 is used daily in the brewery. Previously we have been using manufactured CO2 to meet these needs, which is not only very expensive but also increasingly unreliable.
This is where Dalum steps in.
Based in Denmark, Dalum are one of the industry leaders when it comes to CO2 recovery, seeking to make this sustainable technology financially accessible. They know that most businesses want to meet certain sustainability goals but often struggle to raise the funds to acquire the equipment necessary to achieve them. Like us, they are extremely passionate about what they do and feel that it should be available to as many people as possible. This is why they were the perfect fit for us.
After a few weeks of installation, our system is now up and running, and so far, has recaptured more than 4 tons of CO2 – that’s more than one adult hippo! We are currently recovering up to a ton of carbon gas a week, significantly reducing our reliance on manufactured gas as we work towards operating a more self-sufficient brewhouse. Every 1 ton of CO2 that we recapture equals 2 tons reduced carbon footprint!
Not only are we recapturing Carbon Dioxide during fermentation, but we’ve also been able to recycle gas which remains in our tanks after being emptied. When empty and still under pressure each of our largest tanks can hold roughly 60kg of CO2. Historically this would have simply been vented to atmosphere before the tank is cleaned and refilled, but now we are able to increase our efficiency and recycle this gas so it can be reused for future brews!
All of this brings us another huge step closer to our goal of self-sufficiency in CO2 supply, and it means we’re bubbling with confidence no matter what the market throws our way!
Now that’s something that deserves a CHEERS!
